There’s no doubt that Fraser Gorman takes his music seriously.
A major Bob Dylan fan who will headline the Peninsula Picnic event, Gorman is happiest playing outdoor gigs where the vibe is relaxed with an emphasis on the music.
“I like it when people are chilled out and listening rather than going ballistic (at pubs),” he said.
But that doesn’t mean Gorman — whose indie folk is winning quite a few fans of his own — takes himself seriously.
In fact, quite the opposite.

GUIDING LIGHT FOR SMALL BUSINESS
The film clip to his song ‘Book of Love’ features the muso in various scenes, including reading a tome, with a friendly chook.
“A lot of musicians get caught up and forget the aim is to entertain,” he said.
“You have to be lighthearted and entertain … I don’t try and be a smart-arse.”
In between performing, Gorman has found working part-time as a carpenter provides balance and stability.
“Music is surrounded by late nights and alcohol,” he said.
“It’s tough on your body and your mental state.
“It’s good to do something that’s more regimented and healthy — something that’s less volatile.
“It’s healthy and physical and you get up early.
“It’s still creative and similar to music — if I just worked in bars I would probably be dead by now.”
But music isn’t far from his mind and heart while he’s on the tools.
“I listen to a lot of music at work … I tend to control the music at work,” he said.
Gorman also enjoys the creative outlet of getting together with bandmates.
“I like being with my band and creating whatever energy we need to make cool music,” he said.
The Peninsula Picnic will showcase great food, wine and music at Mornington Racecourse on Saturday, March 30.
Performers include The Rubens, Tia Gostelow and Gorman while food lovers will be spoiled with a great culinary line-up from Jackalope’s Rare Hare and Montalto, to name a few.
