The tight knit Tyabb community is reeling after the death of a 56-year-old man in a horror smash in Moorooduc on Friday morning.

The Tyabb man was a passenger in a Ford ute that collided head on with a Mazda sedan just before 6am.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives were still at the crash site at 2pm on Friday and Mornington-Tyabb Rd was blocked at the entrance to Peninsula Link.

Stumpy Gully Road was also blocked near the accident site and police said it would be hours before the vehicles were removed.

“It’s a nasty scene and a terrible day for a local family,” a police spokesman said.

Mornington Peninsula Shire councillor Paul Mercurio said Tyabb’s small community would throw their arms around the man’s loved ones.

“It’s a respectful community so I’m sure there will space given to the grieving family as well as support,” he said.

Cr Mercurio said residents were still grappling with the clean up from Thursday night’s storms.

“There has been some isolation because the internet has been down and people have been without power.”

Moorooduc locals were shocked but not surprised to hear of the accident that claimed the Tyabb man’s life.

Rosslyn Thompson who owns a vineyard near the Moorooduc crash site said the roads had been blanketed in thick fog on Friday morning.

She said the intersection was notorious for near misses.

“I’ve had a near miss there myself,” she said.

“I was almost hit head on by a truck.”

“It’s not always easy to see oncoming traffic and it’s tricky to switch between Mornington-Tyabb Road which is sealed and Stumpy Gully Road which is a dirt road.”

Meanwhile, a man has been charged following a serious collision in Croydon on Thursday night.

Police believe a Mercedes Benz collided with a Nissan X-trail at the intersection of Eastfield and Bayswater roads about 8.45pm

The 46-year-old female passenger of the Nissan X-Trail sustained life threatening injuries and remains in hospital.

The 58-year-old male driver of the Mercedes Benz was uninjured and allegedly returned a preliminary breath test of 0.114.

The Croydon man has since been charged with negligently cause serious injury and dangerous driving causing serious injury.

THREE DEAD AFTER HORROR WINTER NIGHT

Three people have been killed in a horror 24 hours on Victorian roads, prompting a stern warning from authorities ahead of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

A man has died and a woman is battling life-threatening injuries after a head-on collision in Moorooduc just before 6am on Friday.

Police reported a 20-year-old Mornington woman driving a Mazda sedan, collided head-on with a Ford ute at the intersection of Stumpy Gully and Mornington-Tyabb Roads.

The driver of the Ford, an 18-year-old man, was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile a 50-year-old Gorae woman has died after her car smashed into a tree off the Princes Highway at Bolwarra, 93km west of Warrnambool, after her car left the road and struck a tree at 4.50pm on Thursday, June 10.

The third fatality was a man who died when his car was almost submerged in floodwaters in the south Gippsland town of Woodside.

Police have reported the man, believed to be in his 60s, had freed himself and his border collie from the car, but sadly died while waiting to be rescued.

Victoria Police road policing Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy and Roads and Road Safety state Labor MP Ben Carroll pleaded with the community to take extra caution on the road network.

Assistant Commission Murphy said each of the incidents were preventable, urging people to slow down and drive to the conditions.

“It really breaks my heart,” she said.

“This weekend, please don’t make an irresponsible decision behind the wheel that results in you or those around you becoming another unnecessary statistic that shatters families forever.”

Poor weather conditions are expected across the long weekend, with damaging winds, heavy rain, snow and potential flooding.

Mr Carroll urged every road user to be mindful and patient on the roads.

He urged motorists to avoid driving through floodwaters, and to be aware of black ice, potholes and falling trees.

“We know this long weekend is going to be a long weekend like no other,” he said.

“We want to get through this long weekend with no more lives lost, it’s so critically and vitally important.”

Anyone with information on the incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
