THOMPSONS Rd, Cranbourne, between Western Port Highway and the railway line, makes Ron May see red.

He’s one of hundreds in recent years who have branded it one of Casey’s greatest traffic nightmares, for its frequent peak-hour traffic jams.

Mr May said he believed the inconsistent width of the road was the prime cause of the chaos.

Truck driver David Ashton, of Dandenong, told Leader the section of Thompsons Rd from the west of the highway through to Cranbourne was a no-go area any day after 3pm.

“I’ve learnt the hard way. It’s an absolute disgrace,” he said.

VicRoads plans to build a flyover at the intersection of Thompsons Rd and Western Port Highway when the highway is upgraded to a freeway, but a date for the work hasn’t been set as yet.

Labor has promised to spend $175 million duplicating Thompsons Rd between EastLink and Clyde Rd and creating a flyover at the rail line, if it wins government at the state elections.

Jess Maguire, spokeswoman for Roads Minister Terry Mulder, said the Coalition Government was investigating the scope and cost of an upgrade of Thompsons Rd.

“The Coalition Government will announce its transport and infrastructure policies in the lead up to the state election,” Ms Maguire said.
