A frustrated Tesla driver has shared footage of a diesel powered car blocking an electrical vehicle charging station on the Mornington Peninsula.
The video and photos show a Nissan Navara with a boat attached parked across up to six Tesla charging bays in Mornington.
Jonathan Moss, who recently posted the images to social media, said the Nissan was parked at the Tesla charging station at Home Co shopping centre for at least three hours.
Comments on his post suggested that the driver was indulging in the art of ICE-ing – where internal combustion engine (ICE) cars deliberately block access to EV charging bays.
The act attracts a $369 fine in Victoria.
The fines have also been introduced in three other states but motorists across the border face much stiffer penalties.
In NSW the offence attracts a $2,200 penalty while in the ACT blocking a charging station can lead to a $3200 fine and in Queensland the penalty is $2875.
EV drivers who occupy the spots while not using the recharger can also face penalties.
Australian Electric Vehicle Association national president Chris Jones told AAP the high penalties were necessary to educate the public on the repercussions of such actions.
“No one would like it if I parked my vehicle in front of a fuel bowser and walked inside and ordered lunch,” he said.
“There needs to be an acknowledgment that there are places you can park and places you can’t, and right in front of an EV charger is one where you can’t.”
According to the EV council, there are over 83,000 electric vehicles in Australia.
