FORMER Melbourne United coach and National Basketball League legend Darryl McDonald has fronted court of a different kind today.
The 51-year-old, who played almost 500 games for North Melbourne Giants, Victoria Titans and Melbourne Tigers over a 14-year period in the NBL, appeared before magistrate Gerard Bryant at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for $5619 in unpaid fines.
McDonald accrued the council, toll, parking and speeding fines, among others, from December 2009 to June 2013.
McDonald told the court he had moved house five times during that time.
Magistrate Bryant said the fine equated to roughly 40 days in prison, but said such a length was “harsh and unjust and maybe disproportionate”.
The total of fines was reduced to $1874, towards which McDonald must pay $50 a month or face jail time.
McDonald was handed the interim coaching role at Melbourne United after Chris Anstey left the position after the first game of last season.
McDonald is now the Knox Junior Raiders boys co-ordinator.
