National Doughnut Day 2019: Hole lot of reasons to put a ring on it

Step aside Homer J Simpson, it’s International Doughnut Day. Here’s how to celebrate the tastiest day of the year — and how to do it for free.

Dusted in cinnamon, oozing warm jam or drizzled in glaze, it’s hard to resist a doughnut.

The tasty circle is so popular in the US that it has not one but four days on the food calendar.

There are two National Doughnut Days — the first Friday in June and November 5 — as well as separate days to honour jelly-filled doughnuts (June 8) and cream-filled doughnuts on September 14.

Down Under we keep it simple with just one day of doughnut celebrations.

That day is today and bakers across Melbourne are well prepared.

There’s everything from all you can eat doughnut buffets and doughnut burgers to cocktails inspired by the fried treat and gluten-free, vegan versions.

We’ve complied a list of Melbourne’s most exclusive doughnut experiences and ones that won’t put a hole in your wallet.

Remember when people planned their domestic air travel around layovers at Sydney Airport just to stock up on boxes of these babies?

Now it’s just a matter of visiting one of eight Melbourne outlets to indulge and if you time today you can pick up an original glazed for free.

The offer is for one day only, while stocks last.

This crew has been making old school hot jam doughnuts since the late 1960s.

Today they’ll be selling them for half price to celebrate International Doughnut Day.

Owner Susan Bell said she was expecting to sell up to 5000. “We’ve got extra staff organised,” she said.

This pop up is a side hustle for accomplished jeweller Avak Bedikian. When he’s not creating beautiful pieces to mark romantic occasions Mr Bedikian is producing rings of a different kind. Hugo’s Donuts are so sought after some customers drive for up to an hour to get their hands on one. Different flavours are introduced regularly — this week’s newbie is dipped in cherry glaze, filled with Jam and Nutella, and smothered in coconut. On Friday you can buy three doughnuts and receive a fourth free.

The all you can eat Goldeluck’s doughnut buffet is proving so popular the team has had to extend it for a second day.

The offer allows sweet tooths to gorge on as many doughnuts, dossants (doughnut croissant hybrid), HP doughnut packs, milkshakes and hot drinks they can manage in an hour. Goldelucks founder Phillip Kuoch said he wanted to do something “big and different” to celebrate the day.

“We commonly hear about how much our customers love doughnuts, so we wanted to give them a day where they can eat all they want.”

Tickets are $22 and session times must be pre-booked.

THE EMERSON

The cocktail gurus at The Emerson are also getting in on the act. They’ve designed a doughnut inspired drink to serve on the day.

The Dough-nut Kill My Vibe is a cacao-infused gin based drink with a trio of killer liquors including Liquor 43, Bailey’s and Butterscotch Liquor.

The sugar-rimmed glass is decorated with vanilla and orange Persian fairy floss and topped with a plump doughnut and maraschino cherry.

It’s the perfect start or finish to an indulgent day. But you can only try it today.
