A man accused of nicking number plates in Narre Warren broke down in tears as he fronted court.

Clint Bellingham, 29, cried loudly and appeared irritable during his short appearance at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Friday after he was charged over an alleged early morning crime spree in Narre Warren.

The emotional scenes followed a dramatic street chase after Bellingham was allegedly caught plucking plates from cars along Summerlea Dr about 1.40am.

Patrolling police members pulled up and attempted to speak with him but the alleged thief wasn’t up for a chat, allegedly bolting down Fountain Dr before speedy officers brought his desperate dash to an end.

“He was charged with theft from motor vehicle, possess drug of dependence, resist police and commit indictable offence while on bail,” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

Bellingham, who appeared via video link, was wrapped in a blanket as his lawyer listed his custody management issues.

The defence said Bellingham was withdrawing from a drug of dependence and was suffering from physical injuries after he was allegedly assaulted prior to his arrest.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said Bellingham appeared “highly distressed”.

Bellingham was remanded into custody and will reappear next week.
