A dangerous driver who led police on a wild chase the wrong way down the Monash Freeway at night with no headlights on has been jailed.

Wayne Staff taunted cops by racing towards oncoming traffic at 100km/h on the major arterial road after he had been spotted driving without any working headlights.

And when he was finally caught several weeks later, the disqualified driver mocked them again, saying “if I see police I take off”.

The thrillseeker was also caught with a stash of drugs, more than $10,000 in cash and was in possession of three stolen motorbikes.

The Narre Warren 28-year-old father of two pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, November 10, to 14 charges including reckless conduct endangering life, drug trafficking and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

The court heard at around 12.50am on October 11, 2019, patrolling police noticed a car without headlights on Hallam South Rd, Hallam.

They started to follow the vehicle but it suddenly took off, crossing over to the wrong side of the road.

Staff then turned onto the Monash Freeway and drove down the wrong side of the highway towards oncoming traffic.

Officers tried to follow on the correct side of the road, but a median barrier impaired their vision and Staff turned off onto the South Gippsland Freeway and disappeared.

When he was later arrested he told officers he “had not done anything wrong”, but “if I see police I take off” and he would do anything to get away from the law.

In November 2019, he was found with three stolen motorbikes, including two Hondas and a Harley Davidson.

And in March last year he was discovered in a Rowville hotel room with 800ml of GHB, 12.74g of ice, 103g of cannabis, anabolic steroids, drug paraphernalia and $10,610 in cash.

The habitual trafficker and cop chase criminal is already serving a minimum three-year sentence after he was jailed over another pursuit and drug-dealing crime spree last month.

His defence lawyer had previously told the court Staff has had ongoing drug addiction issues he struggled to cope with.

Magistrate Andrew Halse said his driving was extremely dangerous and his drug dealing was very detrimental to society.

“You were oblivious to the risk (your driving) posed,” Mr Halse said.

“Dealing these sorts of drugs cannot be seen as low level offending, they cause significant problems in the community.

“You have an extreme criminal history, and your behaviour cannot be accepted.”

Staff was jailed for 18 months, and must serve nine months on top of his current County Court sentence.

He was also disqualified from driving for 30 months.
