A COUNCIL plan to stop thrillseekers and litterers from ruining Mt Martha’s environmentally sensitive Pillars is open for comment.

The site has become notorious for attracting hordes of visitors parking illegally, causing traffic congestion, extreme littering, public drinking and offensive behaviour.

Angry locals previously told Mornington Peninsula Leader cliff jumpers were leaving behind mounds of rubbish including urine-filled bottles, used sanitary products and thousands of cigarette butts.

Authorities warned of the dangers, with one swimmer pulled unconscious from the water after striking a cliff while backflipping, and others injured from a jetski collision in the water below the cliff. The council’s plan to clean up behaviour at the site includes signs and patrols to stop cliff jumping and construction of a boardwalk from Hearn Rd to Mt Martha Life Saving Club, with a viewing platform at The Pillars.

Other recommendations include traffic management and parking restrictions in local streets and an education and enforcement campaign.

“The boardwalk will require further investigation regarding the feasibility and state and/or federal funding,” the plan states.

The Pillars area includes Aboriginal middens and artefacts and falls within the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.

Have you say about the plan online at mornpen.vic.gov.au or by mail to Jeska Dee, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Private Bag 1000, Rosebud, 3939, until July 15.
