One of the state’s worst performing railway stations will finally be upgraded under a $1 billion plan to revamp the problem-plagued Cranbourne line.
Merinda Park railway station, which was ranked the fifth worst performing station in the RACV’s 2017 On Track Survey for a raft of issues including a lack of toilets and inadequate seating will undergo a revamp.
The latest designs released by the Level Crossing Removal Project include two platforms to accommodate the duplicated tracks, a pedestrian underpass with lifts, ramps and stairs to access the platforms and covered waiting areas.
Landscaping and vegetation enhancements are also planned with Casey Council requesting as much tree canopy cover as possible.
Casey chair Noelene Duff said she welcomed the progress of the public transport work through the State Government’s Big Build partnership.
“The significant boost in our public transport infrastructure is vital to ensure that our growing community is able to move around more efficiently,” Ms Duff said.
“We welcome the design improvements to the new Merinda Park station and the opportunity for the community to see what is being planned,” she said.
Ms Duff said the council had also identified the need for accessible toilet facilities, which were not yet included in the station design.
“Council officers are hearing from members in our community, including advocates for people with disabilities, calling for public toilet amenities at Merinda Park Station,” she said.
The design for Hallam railway station on the Pakenham line was also released by LXRP last week.
Construction at the station will coincide with track duplication works between Dandenong and Cranbourne, with the project to be completed by 2023.
