A DELUSIONAL thief on a rampage has allegedly tried to burgle a police station on the Mornington Peninsula.

Police allege it took the man just 30 minutes to steal a cash register and tips jar from a cafe and then try to break into a pub before turning his attention to the Sorrento Police Station and trying to jemmy the door.

When that was unsuccessful, he forced his way into two cars parked nearby and stole CDs, an iPhone charger and keys, Mornington Peninsula crime investigation unit detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jason Hocking said.

He said the frenzied crime spree happened in the early hours of last Monday morning within a small area of downtown Sorrento.

Between 2am and 2.30am the man allegedly broke into Rusty’s Cafe Bar and Grill on Pt Nepean Rd, tried to force the door of Sorrento Hotel on Hotham Rd and attempted to get into the police station across the road.

Sen-Sgt Hocking said the thief was seen on the Sorrento Hotel’s CCTV cameras before two cars parked in the Hotel car park were ransacked.

On Wednesday evening a 20-year-old Safety Beach man handed himself in at Mornington Police Station.

He was charged with burglary, attempted burglary and theft from a vehicle and was bailed to face Dromana Magistrates’ Court next month.

Sen-Sgt Hocking said police recovered the cash register and tips jar.

The Sorrento Police Station is an older building and is not staffed 24 hours a day.

The Sorrento Hotel, built in 1872, is the oldest commercial building in Sorrento and the Mornington Peninsula’s oldest hotel.

It also has a National Trust heritage listing.
