A tradie in Melbourne’s southeast has been left with serious injuries after confronting a man allegedly attempting to steal tools from his vehicle.

Police were called to Elm Grove in Langwarrin at about 3am when residents raised the alarm after hearing their neighbour calling for help.

The man, a 37-year-old from Langwarrin, had allegedly been hit with a sledgehammer while confronting a man stealing tools from his vehicle parked outside.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the Elm Grove resident had gone outside to investigate after hearing someone outside his property.

“The man confronted the offender and a struggle ensued before the victim was chased back into his property and assaulted with a sledgehammer,” she said police would allege.

“The 37-year-old victim has been taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.”

He was taken to Frankston Hospital with an upper body injury in a serious condition at around 3.30am, according to an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman.

The alleged offender, a 33-year-old Frankston man, was arrested nearby allegedly hiding in the rear yard of a neighbouring property.

He was taken to hospital under police guard.
