TRANSPORT is emerging as a key issue in Bentleigh, with Labor announcing the planned removal of another level crossing.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews and Labor candidate Nick Staikos this morning promised that they would remove the Centre Rd, Bentleigh level crossing if they were elected in the coming state election.

“Level crossings cause chaos on the roads, slow down trains and put lives in danger,” Mr Andrews said.

“The first step to fixing roads and public transport in Bentleigh is to remove this level crossing.”

Meanwhile Mr Staikos continued the attack on Liberal transport policies last week when he handed in a petition with over 2000 Bentleigh residents’ signatures that opposed the Frankston Line being re-routed past Flinders Street Station as part of the current government’s future plans.

He also spoke at the Metropolitan Transport Forum at Glen Eira Town Hall last week where residents and politicians discussed the need for urgent level crossing removal in Glen Eira.

“Denis Napthine and the Liberals only care about an $8 billion tunnel in the city that won’t do a thing for us,” Mr Staikos said.

“Labor’s plan will mean less congestion on our streets and more trains on the Frankston line.”

But current Bentleigh MP Elizabeth Miller said the East West Link would help ease congestion along the Monash Freeway corridor.

Adding that Mr Andrews’ plan to tear up the contract for the proposed tunnel was “reckless”.

“Commuters stuck in traffic know that the East West Link project will keep Victoria moving,” Ms Miller said.

“Victoria needs the East West Link, the Melbourne Rail Link, the Airport Rail Link, and the widening of Tullamarine and CityLink. Only the Napthine Coalition Government will build them.”

Ms Miller did not attend the MTF because of other commitments.

Leader has requested comment from Bentleigh Liberal MP Elizabeth Miller on her position on the level crossing.
