LABOR has promised to remove the McKinnon Rd level crossing if it takes power after the November state election.
Labor Bentleigh candidate Nick Staikos said the crossing was a “safety risk for pedestrians and a congestion nightmare for motorists.”
“Labor’s plan for Bentleigh will mean less congestion on our streets and more trains on the Frankston line,” Mr Staikos said.
It’s the third level crossing in the electorate that Labor has pledged to remove, with the Centre Rd, Bentleigh, and North Rd, Ormond, crossings also on its to do list.
But current Bentleigh MP Elizabeth Miller said Labor had 11 years in government to do something about McKinnon level crossing, “but they did nothing”.
“Labor cannot be trusted to remove it now if they are elected and they can’t tell you how they will pay for it,” Ms Miller said.
“In contrast, the Napthine Government is already undertaking work to remove the North Rd level crossing – as we promised to in 2010.”
Last year, Victorian Labor announced Project 10,000, a plan to remove 50 of the worst level crossings and build Melbourne Metro Rail to double the size of the City Loop.
