LABOR has added to its list of pre-election promises with a plan to make a notorious school crossing safer.
Bentleigh candidate Nick Staikos on Monday pledged to spend $60,000 to extend the curb at the Centre Rd crossing near Bentleigh West Primary School to reduce it to a two-lane crossing.
The road already has a 40km/h speed zone in operation during school drop-off and pick-up times, but Labor wants to reduce it from 60km/h permanently.
Bentleigh Labor candidate Nick Staikos said it would provide a “safe environment for families to walk to school”.
Parents have been campaigning for close to three years to get the speed limit dropped, but in January were told that VicRoads had no plans to change the speed limit.
Bentleigh MP Miller said she hadn’t been dragging her feet and said she had received a great response for her petition to reduce the speed limit.
“I have a strong track record for improving local road safety in the Bentleigh electorate; in 2012, I installed a new pedestrian crossing at Jasper Road, Ormond, and I have had speed reduced from 60km/h to 40km/h in Centre Road, Bentleigh from 7am to 7pm.”
