A young Langwarrin South man who allegedly drove a stolen car involved in a death-defying smash on the Monash Fwy and fled the scene has been bailed.

Khye Flynn was given a chance to “rebuild his life” in the Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday following the high-speed crash which saw a driver’s car flip onto its roof.

The court heard Flynn was allegedly driving a stolen ute in convoy with another nicked car at speed along the Monash Fwy near Mulgrave on December 2 last year when he used the emergency lane to overtake a silver Honda.

Flynn then allegedly lost control, veering across all lanes and causing the Honda to flip onto its roof.

Flynn allegedly ran from the car and jumped into the other stolen vehicle, whose driver had performed a U-turn against traffic to retrieve him.

The driver of the Honda was taken to Dandenong Hospital suffering pain and soreness, the court heard.

Police allege Flynn was also at the centre of a string of thefts from cars along residential streets in Sandhurst and Carrum Downs in January.

Flynn allegedly nicked items from unlocked vehicles as a getaway car tailed him along his route, the court heard.

He then allegedly tried to use stolen cards to spend big on cigarettes at several nearby petrol stations.

Lawyer Christopher Edwards said his client displayed a “lower end level” of intelligence and lacked social and emotional maturity.

“He has a limited ability to engage in reflective and consequential thinking,” he said.

“But he understands that if he does not pull up, jail could be his future.”

Mr Edwards said Flynn, who had spent 100 days in custody, was “young and particularly vulnerable” if kept behind bars.

Magistrate Dr Michael King said Flynn would be given a “last chance” on bail.

“This is a way for you to rebuild your life … you don’t want to have the rest of your life in and out of prison cells, it’s a pretty miserable way of living one’s life,” he told Flynn.

Flynn, who faces charges including reckless conduct endangering serious injury and theft from motor vehicle, was bailed to return on June 16.

He was barred from driving and ordered to engage with his court integrated services program manager.
