WHEN it comes to icy treats the Mornington Peninsula has summer licked.

The region is home to a range of boutique ice creameries and authentic gelatarias.

In Mornington alone there are trio of options in just two blocks including Tutti Frutti Gelateria, Yummo Icecream and Lolly Shop and Vespa’s Pasta Gelato and Wine Bar.

Or if frozen yoghurt is your guilty pleasure the iconic YOMG is also on Main St.

Tutti Fruitt specialises in artisan gelato hand made on site with owners Peter and Michelle Rafeld selling up to 50 litres of icy goodness every day during peak periods.

Where possible the pair uses Peninsula fruit and juices and source their milk from a local supplier.

The Blake St business has more than 40 flavours all made from scratch.

It also offers gluten and allergen-free options with staff trained how to safely serve people with special dietary requirements.

Also making a name for themselves with the traditional Italian dessert is Vulcano Gelato in Rye.

Gino Maniaci learned how to prepare and serve gelato at his grandfather’s bar and cafe Ritrovo Remigio on the small island of Vulcano.

He brought those lessons to Australian and in 2008 opened Vulcano Gelato.

“Our authentic gelato is made fresh daily using an original and secret recipe established in 1960 by my Grandfather on the island of Vulcano in Sicily,” Mr Maniaci said.

“My Australian-born wife Josephine also fell in love with the mystique and allure of gelato making and spent three European summers working in Italy learning the craft from an artisan with over 50 years experience.”

Another family business that prides itself on serving authentic ice cream and gelato is Mubble Gourmet Icecreamery in Sorrento.

Formerly known as Glace Gelato, the business was renamed by new owners Paul and Kristen Smart.

The couple decided to name the popular business after it’s most sought after ice cream flavour — Mubble.

“If you could capture sunshine and serve it in a cone, it would taste like Mubble,” the Smarts said.
