A Carrum Downs sparky broke down in tears as his ex-girlfriend told a court the how she 10kg and struggled to eat after he violently assaulted her

Kallym Canobie pleaded guilty on Friday to the September 27 assault at the Frankston Magistrates’ Court in which after overdosing on prescription medicine he placed his ex-girlfriend in a chokehold and threatened her and her mother with a kitchen knife.

Senior Constable Adem Ersoy told the court that after the young woman had struggled free, her shirt torn, the victim and her mother fled their home after they saw him grab the knife.

“I do not have the words,” Canobie’s ex-girlfriend said in her victim impact statement.

“I suffer from anxiety, PTSD grief and depression.”

Canobie buried his face beneath the collar of his green prison shirt and wept when the statement described how their “beautiful future” of a life and family together had been shattered.

“I feel betrayed, my heart is gone,” the statement read, which referred to Canobie as “the love of my life”.

“I’m lucky to have four hours’ sleep.

“I fall asleep after my body is exhausted by crying.”

The court was told that in the six weeks leading up to the assault Canobie had overdosed “multiple times”.

On the day of the offending, Canobie accused his ex-girlfriend of sleeping with an apprentice of his and being “a whore”.

When his ex-girlfriend checked her drug prescription half of it was missing, the court was told.

She observed Canobie losing consciousness and phoned 000 which advised her to place him on his side.

But Canobie “jumped up and grabbed” the victim, placing her in a chokehold.

The court heard that after getting free she watched Canobie take a large knife.

“He’s got a f****** knife,” she yelled, leading her mother to run down the street and scream for help, the court heard.

Canobie followed his ex-girlfriend and her mother outside and slashed the tyres of her car and threatened to burn the house down.

Police were called and made a cordon around the house before Canobie collapsed in the driveway.

He was taken to Frankston Hospital before he was discharged shortly after midnight and taken to the Frankston police station, where he told police that he “didn’t know why” he had done what he did.

Magistrate Tim Gattuso, who described Canobie’s ex-girlfriend’s statement as “one of the most articulate and compelling” that he had heard, adjourned the matter to November 18, where the plea will be continued.
