A Dandenong hoon was lucky not to kill someone when he doubled the speed limit in a race from police, a court has heard.

A Dandenong hoon blew the speed limit by almost 50km/hr as he raced from police following an organised car meet, a court has heard.
Joshua Wood, 21, pleaded guilty to driving offences including reckless conduct endangering serious injury in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday following the stupid stunt on September 3, 2019.
The court heard police were watching as the apprentice mechanic “accelerated hard” at the Dandenong South industrial precinct, causing his car’s rear wheels to spin just before midnight.
Officers followed Wood with lights activated as he took off along Kitchen Rd — a 50km/h zone — at 98km/h, before flooring it past a give way sign and coming metres within a passing car.
The Heathmont Secondary College alumna came to a stop in a factory carpark and was arrested, with his vehicle impounded at a cost of more than $1000.
Wood told officers he had “panicked” and sped off in a bid to alert car meet attendees of the police’s presence.
The defence said Wood hadn’t been to a car meet since the incident and had cut ties with friends who he used to attend the events with.
“You’re lucky no one was injured in your spontaneity and foolishness on this occasion,” Magistrate Barry Schultz told Wood.
“I accept (Wood) is a good person who has acted dangerously and stupidly.”
Wood was convicted and fined $1500, had his licence cancelled and was disqualified from driving for a year.
