JOBS and community safety are shaping up as dominant issues in the fight for Narre Warren South in the state election on November 29.

The seat, held by Judith Graley, for Labor, has high youth unemployment and is sensitive to job losses at all age levels. Ms Graley said it topped all other issues, including roads and health.

“If you have a job, you can look after your family,” Ms Graley said. “So many have lost jobs and cannot find replacements. Youth unemployment, with 17.4 per cent of young people (affected) is a tragedy that needs to be fixed. They need to be able to get access to a TAFE or a technical school to get a good job.”

Liberal candidate, Susan Serey said employment and energy costs were important to the electorate, but community safety issues were of greater concern to many. “People have a right to expect to be safe. Beyond that they need jobs and to be able to pay utility bills,” Ms Serey said. “The Coalition will help with its $100 off water bills and extending the seniors’ concession card rebate for electricity to year-round.”

Greens candidate Lynette Keleher agreed jobs were vital. “We need to push for new industry here, preferably in renewable energy and public transport,” Ms Keleher said. “We should be able to build and service more public transport here. We also need more trade and technical schools … Get rid of degrees that do not result in jobs in favour of those that do. Put money back into TAFE,” she said.

For Rise Up Australia candidate, Anthony Sofe, the top issue is repealing anti-discrimination laws. “We need (this) to protect the freedom of speech and religion,” Mr Sofe said. Beyond that, he wanted a better deal for the unemployed and those struggling with high costs of living.

Five people will contest the election on November 29. The fifth candidate, Australian Christians’ Narmien Andrawis could not be contacted for comment before deadline.

The seat is help by Labor with a notional two-party 4.8 per cent margin, based on Victorian Electoral Commission estimates.

The candidates in ballot paper order are Susan Serey, Narmien Andrawis, Judith Graley, Anthony Sofe and Lynette Keleher.
