After a long and brave fight, Rye Johnson, 11, died on Sunday.

The Mornington Peninsula youngster “passed peacefully” after a lifelong battle with cerebral palsy and undiagnosed regression.

His parents Brooke and Rhys Johnson were by his side to the end and later paid tribute to their “Rye-man”, saying his strength would live on through his younger siblings Jed and Bowie.

“Our hearts are breaking and we can’t explain how much we love you Rye-man,” the family posted on social media.

“We know you will be watching over us always.”

The couple also thanked the Royal Children’s Hospital: “Doctors, nurses and staff are beyond amazing”.

Rye’s uncle Jimmy Rees posted a touching tribute to his nephew on Monday.

“What an incredible life of resilience, courage and strength,” he posted.

“The mark you have left on us all will remain forever in our hearts. Uncle Jimmy will see you again soon buddy.”

The Frankston YCW Stonecats also paid tribute to Rye in support of Mr Johnson, who was a former player at the club.

“The Stonecats family hearts are breaking tonight, on the news that past player Rhys Johnson’s beautiful boy Rye has passed away today,” the club posted.

“Our thoughts are with the Johnson family at this extremely difficult time.”

Rye suffered a stroke in utero and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at just six months old.

His ability to speak was impaired, but he was able to communicate using Key Word Sign and via a speech device.

He suffered from Undiagnosed Regression and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, regressing to the cognitive level of a newborn and requiring round-the clock care.

Despite his challenges Rye’s mum said he was a cheeky boy who “even smiled in his sleep”.

His parents shared his journey with the community via Rye’s World on social media and the page was on Monday flooded with comments of love and support.

Many praised the couple for their efforts to raise awareness about life with a child that had special needs.

“Rye captured our hearts through your voice,” Emma Lewis said.

“Thank you for sharing your story with us.

“Your brave boy is at peace now.”
