A violent thug who bashed his ex-wife with a pool cue because she had a relationship with another man has been freed from jail.

Colin Lowe was released on time served after spending 67 days in custody over the vicious attack on his former partner.

The 52-year-old was sentenced at the online Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to charges including recklessly causing injury a week before.

The court heard the man hit his ex-wife with a pool cue, strangled her and bashed her head into a wall until she blacked out.

On August 28 this year she came to his Narre Warren house for a drink and she told him of the love liaison with another man after they had split.

He went ballistic, grabbing her by the throat and squeezing with both hands and banging her head into the plaster wall.

She fell unconscious and slipped to the floor.

When she came round he dragged her to the pool room, picked up a cue and hit her knees and hands.

She tried to get away but he began to strangle her again and she blacked out for a second time.

After she regained consciousness she managed to escape and run to her car.

She drove off, called a family member for help and was taken to hospital with bruising to her arms and legs, a sore head and neck and marks to her legs and hands.

Lowe had split from the woman, who he married in March 2018, three months before the attack.

When police came to interview her she was still struggling to talk due to the pressure that had been applied to her throat.

Lowe handed himself in to police the next day and was remanded in custody.

In his interview he told officers they had drunk a bottle of bourbon and he got annoyed when she brought up the name of a boyfriend.

His defence lawyer said Lowe had issues with binge drinking, was remorseful and this was his first time in custody.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said the woman’s victim impact statement showed how scared she was.

“The ongoing level of fear is very genuine and real,” Ms O’Donnell said.

“She is afraid in relation to him, very afraid.”

Lowe was sentenced to 67 days in jail, classed as time served, and released on an 18-month community corrections order with alcohol and mental health counselling conditions.
