Jealous Narre Warren thug bashed, choked, hit ex-wife with pool cue

A green-eyed Narre Warren brute saw red when his ex told him she was seeing another man and launched a violent, vicious attack on her.

A jealous thug hit his ex-wife with a pool cue, strangled her and bashed her head into a wall until she blacked out.

A green-eyed monster hit his ex-wife with a pool cue, strangled her and bashed her head into a wall until she blacked out because she had been seeing another man.

In a drunken onslaught Colin Lowe viciously attacked the woman at his Narre Warren home when she told him of a love liaison she had after they had separated.

The 52-year-old pleaded guilty to charges including recklessly causing injury at the online Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

He had split from the woman, who he married in March 2018, three months before the attack.

On August 28 this year she came to his house for a drink, and when she told him she had been seeing another man, he went ballistic.

She tried to leave, but he blocked her and threw a glass at the wall.

Lowe then grabbed her by the throat and squeezed with both hands, banging her head into the plaster wall.

She fell unconscious and slipped to the floor, but the violence didn’t stop there.

When she came round he dragged her to the pool room, picked up a cue and hit her knees and hands.

She tried to get away, but he began to strangle her again and she blacked out a second time.

A few seconds later she came to, managed to escape and run to her car.

She drove off, called a family member for help and was taken to hospital with bruising to her arms and legs, a sore head and neck and marks to her legs and hands.

When police came to interview her she was still struggling to talk due to the pressure that had been applied to her throat.

Lowe handed himself in to police the next day and was remanded in custody.

In his interview he told officers they had drunk a bottle of bourbon and he got annoyed when she brought up the name of a boyfriend.

He admitted grabbing her “around the shoulders”, but denied hitting her with a pool cue or banging her head against a wall.

He also drove while suspended on the Monash Freeway in Glen Waverley in April.

His defence lawyer said Lowe had issues with binge drinking, was remorseful, and had already spent 59 days in “onerous” custody.

The woman and her son were also on the court video link and when she was asked if she wanted to make a victim impact statement, she said ‘yes’.

Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said she would need to consider that statement before finalising any sentence.

Lowe would also need to be assessed for a community corrections order, she said.

Ms O’Donnell said the assault was extremely concerning, especially the strangling elements.

“The reality is choking is one of the lead factors in death in family violence situations,” Ms O’Donnell said.

“The victim lost consciousness on two occasions.

“This could have escalated to a horrific outcome.”

Lowe was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on December 3.
