A violent father threatened to go on a killing spree and then commit “death by cops” because his partner left him, a court has heard.
Jayden Stokes told his former girlfriend and mother of his two children that he would blow up his house, hunt down her dad and go on a deadly rampage if she didn’t return within a week.
In the ice-fuelled outburst the Frankston 26-year-old said he would then end the carnage by forcing police to shoot him.
Stokes pleaded guilty to a number of charges including using a carriage service to harass at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
The court heard on January 24 this year he called the woman 61 times and sent her 51 texts.
In the messages and phone conversations Stokes said he would “go on a killing spree of those around me”, “blow up (his) house with an oven” and then end it with “death by cops”.
He gave the woman a deadline of a week to come back to him with the children.
He told her he would go to her mum’s house and also rang her dad, saying he was going to go around to his place.
The ex-partner was petrified he would carry out the threats and contacted police.
When Stokes was arrested he said he couldn’t remember the incident as he had a mental health episode and had “blacked out”.
He was on two community corrections orders for similar violent offending at the time.
His defence lawyer said this was his first time in custody and he had already spent 34 days on remand.
She said he had been using cannabis and ice sporadically during the COIVID-19 lockdown period and when the woman left him he spiralled into serious substance abuse.
Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said in no way was the victim to blame for Stokes’ mental health concerns that had been exasperated by his ongoing drug use.
“This is outrageous offending,” Mr Lethbridge said.
“There were implicit threats to get at her family, burn the house down and then death by cop.
“The threats were significant.”
Stokes interjected, saying what he had done “was beyond a joke”.
Mr Lethbridge said “it certainly was”, and that’s why combined with his “shocking” priors for assaults, threats and arson, he faced a lengthy period of imprisonment.
Stokes will return to court on March 15.
