Bentleigh docker dad Jason Sims jailed for plying girl with ice, filming sex with child

A Bentleigh dad who invited a 15-year-old girl to his house then gave her meth and filmed himself performing sex acts with her has been jailed.

Jason Sims, 48, was sentenced in the County Court on Tuesday to a minimum three years and six months’ jail after pleading guilty to charges including sexual penetration of a child under 16 years and supplying a drug of dependence to a child.

The court heard Sims met the teenager on dating application Skout on May 5 last year and asked her to send a photo of herself to him.

He then told her he was getting a motel in Dandenong and invited her to join. She then told him she was 15, so they would have to keep their activities secret, but that age was only a number to her.

Sims messaged back, “Sorry might be a number to you but I am not a paedophile and have a son that age keep the f*ck away from older guys and harder drugs for f*cks sake”.

But he continued talking to her and told her how to get to the motel.

She met him there after 11.30pm that night and they smoked meth together and he used his phone to film himself blowing smoke onto her breasts and to take topless photos of her.

Sims and the girl then exchanged explicit messages for the next week, with Sims asking her to send explicit videos of herself, and the pair discussed ways to take meth.

He then organised for an Uber to pick her up at night on May 17, 2020 and take her to his home.

At his house, Sims taught the girl how to ‘hotrail’ meth and they both used their phones to film themselves engaging in a range of sex acts together.

The girl then stayed at Sims house until May 20, 2020 while he was at work.

Sims’ crimes were uncovered on June 4, 2020 when an adult discovered the explicit videos on the girl’s phone.

The court heard Sims was a crane operator who had gotten into heavy drug use prior to meeting the girl.

He spent 37 days in custody after he was arrested on June 24 before he was granted bail.

Sims’ lawyer told the court his client had put himself through an intense three-month drug rehabilitation program while on bail, which was like an extra-curial form of punishment.

The lawyer said Sims, who had no criminal history, was very remorseful and had been horrified to learn of the effects of premature sexual activity on children.

The lawyer also pointed out the girl had been just weeks shy of turning 16.

But Judge Justin Hannebery said her exact age did not mean she was entitled to any less protection by the law.

“You nonetheless chose to pursue a sexual encounter with a child,” Judge Hannebery said.

Sims said he was a crane operator after the court heard he began working at the Melbourne docks from a young age.

Sims worked at the docks up until his arrest, the court was told.

It was heard Sims had been living with his mother near Yarrawonga while on bail.

Sims’ mother’s partner, a former police officer, gave evidence that Sims had always been a good father, and said he had been well behaved and not using drugs while on bail.

Sims’ ex-wife and the mother of his child also attested to his good character before the court.

It was agreed between the parties that Sims had committed a serious example of sexual penetration of a child.

Judge Hannebery said Sims decision to film the sex acts had increased the criminality.

Sims was jailed for a maximum five years and six months’ jail.

He was made a registered sex offender for life.
