A drugged-up Cranbourne brickie who crashed his car into a light pole was brought down by the dog squad after trying to do a runner.

Jason Bicchierai pleaded guilty in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on July 23 to theft and numerous driving charges after a drug-driving incident in Lyndhurst.

The court heard Bicchierai had attempted to run away from cops in July last year after he smashed into a light pole.

A witness told police they saw Bicchierai first attempt to drive away from the incident in a Toyota Corolla, but couldn’t due to the damage done to the car.

Bicchierai then tried to run away on foot, before dog-squad officers busted him hiding a short distance away.

Bicchierai was later found to have meth and alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.

The court heard Bicchierai had been driving unlicensed and the car was unregistered at the time of the collision.

Further investigations revealed Bicchierai had both alcohol and meth in his system.

He claimed he’d drunk two cans of a pre-mixed scotch drink after he’d collided with the light pole, before he was caught by police.

In court on Tuesday, Magistrate Frances Medina said Bicchierai’s record of driving offences made for an “unhelpful history”.

“However, I can see you’ve made strong progress and significantly complied with a community corrections order more recently,” she said.

“You’re demonstrating strong stability now with your current employer who has also submitted a character reference for you.”

Bicchierai also faced theft charges from a Warrigal property in 2020, where he and an unknown associate stole scrap metal and a vehicle gear box over a five day period.

Ms Medina sentenced him to a $2000 fine with conviction and warned him if he returned to court he would be facing imprisonment.
