Man outraged at Woolworths’ shoppers abusing baby formula two-tin limits

An outraged man has confronted Woolworths shoppers after filming them snapping up trolleys of baby formula.

Paul Lewis, of Noble Park, told the Leader he was left furious after witnessing two people on Thursday, March 28, at the store in Armada Dandenong Plaza shopping centre, appearing to flout the two-tin limit and stuffing four trolleys full of baby formula.

BABY FORMULA SHORTAGE COULD BE SOLVED

“It’s absolutely ridiculous, these people are clearly sending the tins overseas for profit when there are mothers out there desperate for formula,” Mr Lewis said.

He said he became so “enraged” at the shoppers that he began recording them.

“I was told I didn’t have permission to record but I had to do something as it’s just disgusting that this keeps occurring,” he said.

“This isn’t the first time this has happened here and it’s going to continue unless there’s a major crackdown by Woolworths.”

Woolworths told the Leader there was no shortage of baby formula at the store and store teams were working hard to ensure customers had access to stock when they needed it.

“We have a two-tin transaction limit on baby formula in place,” a spokeswoman, who refused to be named, said.

“Baby formula stock was readily available to customers at our store throughout last week and remains so today.”

She said Woolworths encouraged customers to speak with store management if their chosen baby formula was out of stock.

There have been previous complaints about shelves being stripped bare across the country by daigou — or personal shoppers — who make huge profits sending the formula to China.

There’s also been concern that the formula shortage is putting Australian families at risk, according to concerned parents, who rely on the milk powder to feed their infants.

Coles last year made moves to put its baby formula behind the counter, similar to controlled products like tobacco and knives.

This was after parents had taken to social media to vent their frustration at customers stockpiling and stripping shelves.
