A Carrum Downs woman, 31, is fighting for her life in hospital after she was struck while crossing the road allegedly by a motorcyclist who police say was unlicensed and “took off” after seeing police just moments before collision.

Frankston Crime Investigation Unit detectives was investigating the collision which occurred on McCormicks Rd in Carrum Downs on Tuesday about 7.20pm.

Inverloch man Jefferson Hughes was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital under police guard.

The 29-year-old made a brief appearance before Frankston Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon to face a string of charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury, drive in a manner dangerous and unlicensed driving.

Mr Hughes spoke briefly to his lawyer from the dock before the short hearing began.

The court heard Mr Hughes had been diagnosed with ADHD and may be withdrawing from drugs.

He had not yet been assessed for the Court Integrated Services Program (CISP).

Mr Hughes was told he would remain in custody ahead of a bail application hearing on Thursday.

Earlier on Wednesday a police spokesperson said local officers had come across a motorcyclist just before the accident on Tursday night.

Police alleged the rider turned in front of their vehicle from Gamble Rd when he spotted them and “immediately reacted and took off, just prior to the collision”.

Police were not in pursuit of the motorcycle at the time of the alleged collision.

Victoria Police alleged the rider was unlicensed and also returned a positive oral fluid test.

Professional Standards Command would have oversight of the investigation, as per usual practice, where police had been in the vicinity of a critical injury collision.
