Ice addict raped Pakenham woman during horrifying knifepoint bathroom attack

A Pakenham woman thought she had made herself clear when she told a man she just wanted to be friends. But when she trusted him to visit her home and help move furniture, he unleashed a brutal rape that scarred her for life.

A former semi-professional soccer player turned ice addict who brutally raped a woman at knifepoint during a terrifying hour-long ordeal in her home has been jailed.

Rasit Serin, 40, was sentenced in the County Court to a minimum of six years and three months in jail on August 5 after raping the woman who “just wanted to be friends”.

The court heard a naked Serin grabbed his 51-year-old victim from behind and held a 32cm blade to her throat before shoving his genitalia into her mouth across two horrifying half hour ordeals in the woman’s bathroom and bedroom at Pakenham September 14.

“Suddenly you were behind her — naked — you grabbed her from behind with your arm around her neck, you held a knife to her throat … she could feel it pressing against her skin,” Judge Susan Pullen said.

“You were incredibly aggressive towards her, waving the knife around and pointing it to the ground …(you said) get down, f****** get down there and do as you’re told.

“(The victim) was terrified you were going to kill her and drown her in (her) bath that was still full with water.

“Every time she tried to get up, you pushed her down.”

Serin allowed the terrified woman to have a shower as he watched with knife in hand before continuing the attack in her bedroom.

He then got dressed, apologised and left.

“You apologised but (said you) knew that wouldn’t really cut it,” Ms Pullen said.

The pair met and smoked ice together at a bar earlier this year, however the victim quickly ended their relationship after Serin “started losing it” and sent her “increasingly threatening” text messages.

But two days before the rape, Serin, from Dallas, tried to tell the woman what a “positive influence” she was after inspiring him to stop smoking ice and start going to the gym.

The victim suspected Serin was on ice when he arrived at her home the day of the attack.

She had invited him over to help move and dismantle furniture.

“(After the attack she) rang a friend just before 3pm and was hysterical, screaming …(she) said she thought you were going to kill her,” Ms Pullen said.

The petrified woman notified police who pounced on Serin on September 19.

Serin, who had previously fronted court for domestic incidents and experienced two broken marriages, was on a community corrections order at the time of the sickening attack.

He told police the victim was “trying to get sexual” with him and that he was “not interested” in her as he was trying to rekindle a relationship with an ex.

The court heard Serin had a difficult childhood plagued by his father’s gambling and alcohol addiction.

Serin played semi-professional soccer for clubs in Dandenong and Broadmeadows and worked as a cook in a restaurant and kebab shop before trying ice in 2014.

Ms Pullen heard the victim had been left feeling “worthless” with the attack affecting “every single aspect” of her life.

“(The attack) triggered trauma from a past relationship she tried to overcome. (She experiences) remoteness with friends and family (and feels) isolated,” Ms Pullen said.

“(She) remembers the flash of the knife … the flashbacks are frightening and difficult to cope with.”

Serin pleaded guilty to rape and was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison with a non-parole period of six years and three months.
