A woman facing charges of attempted murder following a house fire in Melbourne’s southeast that left two young girls critically injured will recover from her injuries while in custody.
Hyun Ju Anh, 37, did not apply for bail when she fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a filing hearing on Friday facing two charges of attempted murder.
Detectives from Victoria Police’s Arson and Explosives Squad arrested the Chadstone woman on Thursday morning in connection with the May 21 blaze that tore through a two-storey townhouse on Terrigal Street.
Emergency services were called to the property just before 9.40pm after reports of smoke and flames pouring from the building.
Detectives believe a gas cylinder inside the home exploded as the fire took hold of the brick property.
Fire crews forced their way into the home, rescuing the woman and two girls, aged seven and eight at the time, from the first floor of the home.
The trio was found unconscious and huddled together on the floor of the home’s master bedroom on the second storey.
The girls’ mother was rushed to The Alfred while her two young girls were taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.
The house’s fourth resident, a 36-year-old man who was not present at the time of the fire, was questioned by police but not deemed a suspect.
Ms Anh, who had been recovering in hospital with burns to her hands, was remanded in custody to appear on November 21 for a committal mention.
