How many active cases in Victoria today: Covid numbers for your area

Covid cases are soaring again with more than 100 being reported in a single day in one council area. See the hot spots.

Covid is again taking hold across Melbourne as the number of cases jumps 63 per cent in a week.

The number of active cases in Victoria on Friday was 15,653, up from 9,607 the same time last week.

There are currently 277 Covid-19 patients in Victorian hospitals, including eight patients in intensive care and one on a ventilator.

Sadly, a total of 41 Covid-related deaths were reported in the past week.

According to the Health Department the rise in cases was driven by the emerging Omicron sub-variants including BQ. 1 and XBB.

However, a statement from the chief health officer revealed there was currently no evidence to suggest the sub-variants caused more severe disease.

“However, hospitalisation rates are likely increasing due to waning immunity from past vaccination and the ability of these new sub-variants to escape immunity from past infection,” the statement said.

The LGAs of Casey (814 new cases) and Wyndham (636 new cases) have been hit hardest by the virus.

Postcode 3030 which includes Point Cook, Werribee and Werribee South recorded the highest number of active cases on Friday with a total of 353 for the week..

Meanwhile in the past 24 hours there were 123 new cases reported in Casey taking the LGA’s number of new infections for the week to 814.

Of the total number of cases reported for the week 266 were in postcode 3977 which includes Cranbourne, Devon Meadows and Cannons Creek.
