A father caught with a vile stash Japanese child abuse material at Melbourne Airport upon his return from overseas claims he didn’t think cartoons could be considered pornography.
Hongyun Wang risks losing his home as his wife will struggle to keep up with repayments in his absence, the County Court has heard.
Wang, 35, of Glen Waverley, pleaded guilty to one charge of importing tier two goods into Australia and was sentenced on Monday to 16 months’ imprisonment.
Judge Amanda Chambers ordered that he be released on a recognisance release order after serving four months, to be on good behaviour for two years.
On December 8, 2023, Wang returned from overseas and a check by Customs on his iPad Pro revealed it contained 805 Japanese Hentai child abuse images.
Judge Chambers said 139 images depicted images of actual children aged between nine and 11 either performing sex acts or in sexually provocative poses.
Wang told Customs he had no knowledge of the material on the iPad as the device had not been used in a long time.
On January 11, 2024 police seized a gaming PC and two DVDs from his home which contained 22 child abuse images.
He imported the DVDs on three separate occasions in 2023 from Japanese retail business Mandarake.
The first DVD had 11 videos of child abuse material, including a seven-minute video that showed a prepubescent female aged between 11 and 12 posing in a sexually provocative manner wearing a g-string.
The second DVD contained three videos, including a 33-minute video of a young female aged between 10 and 11 engaged in sexual activity with an adult male.
Wang told police he looked at the child abuse material but did not promote or publish it.
He said he didn’t understand that cartoons that didn’t depict real people could be considered child abuse material.
“The degrading and depraved nature of the sexual activity depicted in the videos of pre-pubescent children is an indicator of the gravity of the offending associated with the importation of the two DVDs,” Judge Chambers said.
She said while she understood Wang’s risk of losing his home after going to jail would cause him considerable stress and anxiety, the offending warranted a prison sentence.
