Hannah Mary Boyce: Blairgowrie woman charged with deception over french bulldog scam

A Mornington Peninsula woman allegedly behind an online scam involving french bulldog pups has fronted court.

Alleged puppy scammer faces court

Blairgowrie woman Hannah Mary Boyce has faced court over an alleged puppy scam involving animal lovers being fleeced of $31,000.

The 43-year-old allegedly advertised french bulldog puppies for sale through online marketplaces, asking hopeful dog owners to make a substantial deposit to secure a pup.

Five potential buyers lost more than $31,000 collectively during the alleged scam which occurred between January and April last year.

Police told the Herald Sun in August 2021 that once people paid the deposit, they were asked for transport and veterinary costs before the seller allegedly ceased all contact leaving the buyers substantially out of pocket and without a puppy.

Detective Acting Sergeant Catherine Weeks said the scheme had taken advantage of people looking for a furry friend to help them get through lockdown.

Ms Boyce’s contest mention at Frankston Magistrates Court on Tuesday was initially stood down for further private negotiations between police and Legal Aid.

Ms Boyce was appointed Legal Aid counsel just hours before the hearing.

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge later adjourned the matter until May 3.

He warned Ms Boyce the matter would proceed on that date and if she wanted legal representation she would need to arrange it in advance.

“It is in your best interest to obtain a legal representative,” Mr Lethbrigde said.

“If you fail to do that it’s on your head.”

Ms Bocye’s bail was extended until May 3.
