Fitness leaders will meet with the State Government to call for an increase in patron numbers as the industry prepares to reopen.

A density limit of one person per 8 sqm will apply and a cap of 10 people per space and 20 per venue when gyms reopen on November 9 in Melbourne.

Last week, the Leader visited Fitness First in Richmond, which is a large the 3650 sqm facility, meaning that it will be one person working out per 365 sqm.

Fitness Australia chief executive Barrie Elvish said a meeting had been confirmed with DHHS and Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions on Wednesday, November 11, with density limits “high on the agenda”.

“Based on the current restrictions for reopening we know that 60-70 per cent of Victorian gyms – ones that are under 1000 sqm – the average operating loss will be $20,621 per month while these limits are in place,” Mr Elvish said.

“For gyms over 1000 sqm the average operating loss will be $65,161 per month.”

He said the government should be trying to make it easier for businesses to resume and get people back to work.

“We have data that proves this can be done safely within the fitness industry.

“Fitness Australia has worked collaboratively with other state and territory governments to put robust COVID-Safe plans in place that have worked – not only in keeping people safe but allowing businesses in our industry to get back track in a viable capacity.”

Fitness Australia’s independent research found 92 per cent of Victorian gym members want to return to the gym as soon as they open.

But Mr Elvish it would be a long time before members can frequent the gym.

“With these capacity limits in place, it will effectively be impossible for the 900,000 gym members across the state to restart a regular routine the gym. They will essentially have to take a number and wait their turn,” he said.

“We have the best interests of Victorians in mind – both from a health and mental wellbeing perspective and also for the thousands of businesses and employees who are eager to get back to work and provide an essential service to our community.”

DHHS has been contacted for comment.
