The Frankston line has been pulled from the City Loop service as part of a huge shake-up of Melbourne’s train network.
The change, coming into effect on January 31, means all Frankston trains will run direct to Flinders St station where they will continue to Werribee and Williamstown via Southern Cross.
Passengers looking to travel to Melbourne Central, Parliament and Flagstaff stations will be forced to switch services at Caulfield or Richmond.
It comes as an extra 450 weekly train services were announced for Melbourne and Victoria’s timetables in a shake-up being hailed as the biggest change since the creation of the loop.
Pakenham and Cranbourne trains will continue to run anticlockwise through the loop, and a 30 per cent discount will also be offered to commuters travelling between 930am and 4pm or after 7pm.
The 280 new services added to metropolitan Melbourne are expected to provide capacity for an extra 100,000 passengers each week.
The State Government expects the changes will reduce overcrowding for more than 24,000 passengers, with 7100 fewer people forced to stand.
The announcement comes as funding to extend the Frankston line through to the Mornington Peninsula was snubbed in last week’s State Budget.
The Federal Government has listed the Frankston rail extension as a national infrastructure priority earlier this year and maintained its $228 million contribution to the project since 2018.
