A sick sexual predator who performed a lewd act in front of a terrified teenage girl on an empty train has been told to expect more time behind bars.

Timothy Nash performed a sex act while intently staring at and making suggestive remarks to the frightening 19-year-old on a Frankston line train earlier this year.

He has already served more than 200 days on remand, but was told he is going to be spending longer in prison for his disgusting act.

Nash, a disability support pensioner with mental health issues, also admitted setting fire to a trolley full of newspapers at Cranbourne Park shopping centre in July last year.

He appeared by video link at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Monday after previously pleading guilty to charges including sexual activity directed at another person.

The court heard at about 8am on May 11 this year the victim had got on at Richmond before Nash, who was already on the train, saw her and walked through the carriages.

He sat directly opposite the girl, even though there was no one else there and dozens of other seats available.

He asked her to do dirty and disgusting things and described sexual acts he wanted to do to her.

He then started rubbing his genitals through his jeans, thrusting and moaning while watching her.

She was crying hysterically and in shock until she managed to muster the courage to get up and force open the doors as the train pulled into Caulfield station.

Metro staff comforted the distraught girl until police arrived, while Nash continued on his journey before getting off at Southland station.

In a second incident 10 days later he saw the girl at her workplace and stared at her, asking her if she remembered him from the train, before staff called police and he left.

He was later arrested in St Kilda but unable to be interviewed due to his aggressive behaviour.

The court heard he has a criminal history including priors for sexual assault and indecent assault.

His defence lawyer said at times Nash was homeless and during these incidents he hadn’t been taking his mental health medication.

Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge said his behaviour would have caused terrible fear for the victim.

“The terror she must have felt trapped on that train as the only passenger,” Mr Lethbridge said.

“It was intentional, deliberate and voluntary conduct that happened all the way from Richmond to Caulfield station.

“It must be a significant term of imprisonment.”

He said the 230 days Nash had already spent on remand was not enough, and the duration of his prison term would be dependent upon a community corrections order assessment.

His case was adjourned and he will be sentenced at a later date.
