Frankston street attack leaves young dad with fractured skull, bleed on brain

A suspected one-punch attack outside a Frankston hotel has left a Hastings father in hospital with a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain, prompting the leader of a coward punch campaign to urge people to “put their fists down and walk away”.

A young father has been left with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain following a suspected one-punch attack outside a Frankston pub.

It is believed the 33-year-old was outside the Grand Hotel in Frankston’s CBD when he was assaulted just before 3am on Sunday.

The Hastings man was taken to The Alfred hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The victim’s family took to social media calling for the attacker to hand themselves in.

“To the horrible human — if that’s what you can call him — that king-hit my son-in-law outside The Grand on Sunday morning … hand yourself in,” the man’s mother-in-law Sandra Knox wrote.

“(There is) a little boy missing his dad … you are a disgrace.”

The attack comes after one-punch coward Ryan Wells elbowed a stranger in the head and laughed as he walked away in an unprovoked attack at Frankston in July last year.

The victim’s sister-in-law, Candice Knox, also took to Facebook and posted a link to the STOP: One Punch Can Kill campaign.

“My nephew needs his dad … please help my brother in law,” she wrote.

Caterina Politi, whose son David Cassai was killed when he was king-hit at Rye on New Year’s Eve in 2012, told the Leader a bigger police presence was needed at problem areas at Frankston and across the Mornington Peninsula.

Ms Politi founded the STOP: One Punch Can Kill charity after her 22-year-old boy never regained consciousness when he was struck to the pavement in an unprovoked attack by Millgrove teenager Dylan Closter.

“(In a friendship group) there’s always one d*ckhead, or one drunk, or one who gets angry easily … that’s where friends can step in,” she said.

“I’d rather be out of business, and with no need for this campaign. But there is still a big need for it.

“All it takes is one second for a perpetrator to make the worst decision of their lives … if everyone kept their fists down and kept walking … none of this would be happening.”

Sunday’s assault is not the first alleged attack to have taken place outside the Grand Hotel, with multiple people commenting on Ms Knox’s post on the Frankston and Carrum Downs news Facebook page about other violent episodes.

Debbie Saber told Leaderher son was left with a fractured cheekbone when he was kicked repeatedly outside the busy Nepean Highway bar in 2010.

“Police were notified and an ID was given of one of the assailants who was apparently known to police, but nothing was ever done,” she said.

“They were pushed to the ground and kicked in the head repeatedly …(The Grand management) said their footage did not cover that area.”

Another woman, Debra Biasci, said another attack left her son with a broken jaw.

“My son had his jaw busted in three places at that joint … they did absolutely nothing,” she wrote on Facebook.

“The only response I received (was) ‘we aren’t babysitters’ … unfortunately the cowards were never caught.”

The Grand Hotel management refused to provide a comment to the Leader.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Frankston CIU detectives were investigating following an assault on Davey St, Frankston about 2.45am on Sunday, October 27.

“Police have been told two groups of people became involved in an altercation,” the spokeswoman said.

“A 33-year-old Hastings man was assaulted by another man during the incident and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

No arrests have been made at this stage and the investigation remains ongoing.”
