Frankston residents urged to eat local and avoid delivery amid coronavirus outbreak

Frankston restaurants have made a plea for hungry customers to help keep local workers in jobs. And doing your bit could be easier than you think.

Frankston restaurant owners have urged the public to order takeaway directly from eateries as the hospitality industry comes to grips with the coronavirus outbreak.

Vero Pasta and Wine owner Andrea Papapostolou said hungry customers should call their favourite dine-in spot and pick up their meal instead of using delivery apps so the business gets “100 per cent of the profits.”

She urged residents to support Frankston City Council’s Frankston Food Move, which encourages members of the community to order at least one meal or drink from the region’s bars, restaurants and cafes each fortnight.

The plea comes after Melbourne traders urged food delivery apps to slash commission rates as small businesses struggled under the State Government’s strict social distancing rules.

“It doesn’t matter how good your business was, how it traded previously or how popular you

were, no business can survive without an income for potentially three months,” Ms Papapostolou said.

“I’m trying desperately to keep my staff on, I feel terrible having to cut shifts (because) this is their livelihood as much as mine.

“Call your favourite restaurant and pick up your own meal to ensure the restaurant gets 100 per cent of the profits.

More than 130 residents have taken the Frankston Food Move pledge, with all entrants going into the draw to win a $50 voucher to spend at their chosen Frankston venue.

“It would be great to have the support of the community through this campaign,” Spanish Bar Seaford owner Adriano Gonzalez said.

“We appreciate Council being proactive … it’s tough for everyone and we need to be strong

as a community.”
