An 18-year-old has been charged over a one-punch attack on an off-duty policeman on Grand Final Eve.

The 20-year-old police officer, who lives in Frankston, was chatting with friends outside Flanagan’s Irish Bar when he was allegedly approached by the suspect just after 1am on Friday, September 27.

It’s understood the pair had a brief conversation outside the Nepean Highway pub before the man allegedly punched the victim in the face.

The impact knocked the off-duty officer unconscious before he fell and hit his head on the concrete pavement.

He was out cold for 15 minutes before he was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Frankston crime investigation unit boss detective Senior Sergeant Steve McKenzie said it was feared the young man suffered a fractured skull.

Tests later revealed the officer, who does not wish to be named, escaped with severe concussion and lacerations.

“He’s very lucky to survive the attack,” detective Sen-Sgt McKenzie said.

“It was a very serious assault which could have killed him.

“It’s a classic example of a victim being knocked out before he has hit the ground which can lead to serious injury or death.”
