The wild west of Western Port

A weapon-wielder caught with a flick-knife down his pants and a butcher’s knife in a car has labelled Hastings a dangerous town. The 27-year-old was as a passenger in a car pulled over by police in Marine Parade, Hastings about 1.30am on April 23 this year. He had cannabis in his backpack, which he was cautioned for. But a search of him uncovered a flick-knife tucked down his pants and a larger knife near the car’s console, which he admitted belonged to him. When asked why he was carrying weapons, he said “I have been jumped before in Hastings, you police don’t know what it is like in Hastings”. In court his defence lawyer said he came over from Western Australia four years ago to work at the energy plant and suffered from long-term mental health issues. He was convicted and fined $750.

Student in strife over train ticket troubles

A Kiwi student who said he had no money to commute to his courses has told a court it should be okay for him to travel without paying. The Myki-avoiding misbehaver was nabbed by ticket officers after jumping the barriers at Frankston train station at 5pm on March 27 this year. He said he had only been on a short trip – from Kananook station - so “thought it would be okay”. He was given a $242 fine, but chose to contest it. He represented himself in court, saying he was “not a bad person” and just didn’t have the money to pay for train fares. He said he was an unemployed student from New Zealand and he couldn’t get benefits, so had no way to pay the infringement. The magistrate said he “can’t just ride for free and expect everyone else to subsidise him” and gave him a $100 fine.

Dry-cleaning driver learns a lesson

A dodgy-driving dad who was nabbed without an interlock taking his kids’ clothing to be dry-cleaned has been hit hard in the hip pocket. The Cranbourne man was pulled over by police on Berwick-Cranbourne Rd in Clyde at 9pm on May 13 this year. He had been pinged drink-driving while three-times over the limit in 2015 and had to have an interlock fitted in any car he drove. But he didn’t. He represented himself in court and said he was running late and needed to get his kids’ clothes cleaned for school the next day, so hopped in the car. He said he now has the interlock device fitted. The disability support worker was convicted and fined $1000.
