Frankston Council parking blitz around Frankston Basketball Stadium

BE warned — Frankston Council is planning a major blitz on illegal parking around Frankston Basketball Stadium.

Parking fines cancelled

THE council is planning a major blitz on illegal parking around Frankston Basketball Stadium.

The area is popular with commuters and university students, who park there to access the nearby Kananook Train Station.

Mayor Colin Hampton said 150 cars were recently issued with warnings — not infringements — for parking illegally on the reserve area (grassed areas) near the stadium.

“Most of the car park at the stadium has always been three hour parking,” he said.

“Due to recent feedback from the stadium regarding a lack of parking this was extended to incorporate the parking bays alongside the stadium.”

Cr Hampton said parking had never been permitted on the grass area because they limited the council’s ability to cut the grass and caused “significant damage” to the grounds.

He said 10 infringements have been issued in the last four weeks.

Many commuters have traditionally parked on the grassed area all day.

Stadium officials denied they had lodged complaints about the management of carparking. “On the contrary, we encourage students commuting by train to use our car park,” said an official, who didn’t want to be named.
