Mayor Colin Hampton said talks convened by Dunkley federal MP Chris Crewther between council and the Frankston and District Basketball Association (FDBA) had not resolved the matter.

“The discussion indicated to council that the FDBA had not changed its position which previously caused council to withdraw from the project,” Cr Hampton said.

The meeting came after Federal Local Government Minister John McVeigh set a deadline urging council to state how it would use the $5.2 million funding — slated for the stadium revamp — by the end of March.

Cr Hampton said the council would respond to the request before the deadline.

Mr Crewther said the best outcome was for the funds to be used for the stadium.

“I have worked with my Federal colleagues to ensure that the $5.2 million Federal Government funding has remained on the table,” Mr Crewther said.

FDBA general manager Nathan Jolly said the stadium project would boost basketball in the region.

The failed project was slated to feature four new courts, new entry and reception, a new cafe with commercial kitchen and new change rooms.

The revamp — based on funding from the State (2.5 million) and Federal Governments, council ($4 million) and the FDBA ($1 million) — collapsed late last year after council pulled out following a bitter dispute with the FDBA over a new lease for the stadium.
