A community campaign to support Mornington Peninsula food and wine businesses during lockdown is launching an ordering app.

Food and Wine with love already has more than 500 listings from high end eateries such as Point Leo Estate to neighbourhood fish and chip shops.

It includes food traders from across the Mornington Peninsula, Greater Frankston and into Casey.

Creator Isidora Love said the app and business directory was born out of overwhelming support for the Peninsula Food with Love Facebook page she started in March.

“I was lying in bed at night worrying about my favourite local cafes. How would they survive this pandemic and what could I do to help?” Ms Love said.

The Dromana real estate agent decided to start a social media campaign to promote the region’s food traders and encourage others to support their own locals.

“Before I knew it I had 10,000 followers,” she said.

Ms Love said she was overwhelmed by the support for her initiative.

“I had people dropping off platters and food boxes and samples at my front door to say thank you and to show me more about their product,” she said.

The Peninsula Food with Love Eat & Drink Local Support Local page now has 16,500 members.

“It was becoming more and more difficult to keep up with the information and respond to requests,” Ms Love said

“What we needed was a beautiful website with a comprehensive directory.”

Ms Love also wanted to find a way to help traders avoid high costs associated with delivery apps such as Uber Eats and Menu Log.

“They the businesses charge 30 per cent. Our food traders are struggling, they don’t want to be losing that much every time someone orders a delivery,” Ms Love said.

The app is free to download and businesses are not currently charged a fee for their listing.

Ms Love said she may consider a small subscription fee for traders to be included to cover the cost of running the web page and app.

The app will be available to download later this week.
