Times are tough for many people, but that has not stopped hundreds of Victorians digging deep to raise money for the most vulnerable in our community.
Carlton Woolworths shoppers have generously donated almost 10,000 free meals to vulnerable Australians.
The Carlton store has collected more than $4600 at the halfway point of the national Feed Appeal, which raises funds to help local food charities feed those most in need.
Shoppers’ donations at the checkout will help supply ovens, freezers, cool rooms, transport, and other vital infrastructure to help charities store, cook and share more meals with the most vulnerable in their communities.
YOU CAN HELP COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE STATE BY DONATING TO THE FEED VICTORIA APPEAL
This year, the Feed Appeal has reported a more than 50 per cent increase in the number of people seeking food relief in the wake of bushfires, drought and the coronavirus pandemic.
The Feed Appeal, which continues until August 23, was founded by national food charity FareShare and News Corp Australia in 2009 when they realised charities hoping and needing to feed more people in their communities were unable to scale up their operations because they were lacking the infrastructure or funding to do so.
Feed Appeal CEO Katherine Gokavi-Whaley said the willingness of everyday people to donate and support those less fortunate was inspiring.
“Australians are experiencing challenging times with COVID-19, but it is heartwarming to see they are still thinking of others and digging deep to help,” she said.
Woolworths Victoria General Manager Andrew Hall said: “Food insecurity is an incredibly real issue, made even worse during COVID-19, which is why it is more important than ever that we continue to support our long standing food rescue partnerships as they help people who need it most across Victoria.
“We’re proud of the progress made for the appeal to date and encourage any customers interested in supporting to donate when shopping at their local Woolworths.”
News Corp Australia’s Community Ambassador Penny Fowler said the increase in demand for food relief meant this year’s Feed Appeal was the most important to date.
“For more than a decade we have supported the Feed Appeal’s mission to feed Australia. 2020 is shaping up as the toughest year in at least a generation with drought, bushfires and now coronavirus having a significant impact on our community that should not be underestimated.
“Together with Woolworths we are delighted to support Feed Appeal again this year and hope that now, more than ever, we can make a difference and help feed struggling Australians.”
A $2 donation creates four meals. All donations to the Feed Appeal will be granted back to food charities in the same state in which the donation was made.
