Fears Rosebud aged care complex will bring traffic woes

Rosebud residents are bracing for a battle over an aged care giant’s plan for a multi storey complex in their street.

There are fears a proposed $45m aged care complex close to the foreshore in a holiday hot spot on the Mornington Peninsula could cause traffic woes, with one local asking why it needed to be so big.

The four-storey complex would be built opposite Rosebud Foreshore Camping Reserve — often packed during the summer holidays — and close to the Rosebud Hospital and Rosebud Plaza.

The Mercy Health proposal has just opened for community feedback, but already there are concerns over what it would do to traffic in the area and the loss of trees on the site chosen for the complex.

Shirley Bastow lives near the development site, which stretches from Point Nepean Rd to Marks Ave, and was worried it would lead to her street being clogged with cars.

“It's already an issue in summer. There are no parking restrictions in our street and people park here and walk to the beach, which isn’t far away,” she said.

The 89-year-old was also anxious about the future of several large gum trees growing along the fence line of the development site.

“I love the trees, I’d hate to see them go,” she said.

Ms Bastow has lived in the area for 13 years and said while she understood the need for aged care, she questioned the size of the development.

“I know we need these things, I’m getting to that age myself! But four storeys in an already busy area is a worry.”

Another local mum who lived opposite the development site feared it would make her street dangerous for her children.

The proposed complex would have basement parking and a rooftop terrace and feature 63 low care units over three floors and a further 16 units for up to 128 residents needing high care.

A restaurant, cafe, pool, gym, wellness centre and beauty salon would also be included in the development.

The development site is between a private caravan park and the existing Mercy Place Rosebud.

The planning application was recently lodged with the local council and a decision is not expected before September 18.
