A starving elderly dog with protruding bones and rotten teeth has miraculously survived a shocking case of neglect in Melbourne’s southeast.

Peanut the Maltese Terrier was handed into the Australian Animal Protection Society’s (AAPS) Bangholme shelter this week, but rescuers say the poor pup “won’t be the last” to suffer shocking abuse.

Peanut presented at the shelter in a skeletal condition with decaying teeth and brittle fur, but it’s unknown where he came from or how long he was suffering for.

“(He) came to us with a long list of medical issues …(his) nutritional, dental and grooming needs, as well as his heart and skin conditions, had been completely neglected,” An AAPS spokeswoman said on Facebook.

“He is not the first and definitely won’t be the last to come to us seeking treatment and refuge, as there are many animals who have suffered hardship and abandonment.”

The woman said the shelter required ongoing donations to ensure animals like Peanut could be adequately cared for.

“We never turn away an animal in need and treat each animal as an individual with special needs. However, as more animals come in so do the significant financial costs for their medical treatment, housing, training, and ongoing care,” she said.

“Lost, abandoned, mistreated, unwanted …. No matter what the situation, we are here for them.

“We need help to in order to continue to accept and care for animals like Peanut who need a second chance.”
