A Mornington Peninsula fun run for up to 500 people has been given the green light as Melbourne emerges from lockdown.
The November 7 event is set to be Victoria’s first big community event once the 80 per cent vaccination target is reached.
The annual Devilbend Fun Run and Walk at Moorooduc will feature a half marathon, 12km, and 7km events and a magic mile for the kids.
All participants, volunteers and spectators aged 12 and over will have to show proof of double vaccination to attend.
Devilbend Race Director Craig Mahony said it was a relief to be able to host the event after organisers were forced to cancel the 2020 run and reschedule the 2021 event three times during lockdowns.
“After so much uncertainty and an extended period of time without community events such as fun runs, we are so excited that we are able to hold Devilbend this year,” Mr Mahony said.
“Compared to other fun runs, our event is really unique as it takes in the trails and tracks of the reserve, is accessible enough for beginners, but also provides a fun challenge to experienced trail runners.”
“Getting out and tackling this event in the great outdoors is just the tonic many of us need after a long and difficult period in lockdown.”
The event is organised by Mornington Peninsula Athletics club and has been running for more than 40 years.
Mr Mahoney said the 2021 event would be an important boost for the club which was starting its season late.
Entries for the 2021 Devilbend Fun Run and Walk are expected to sell out before the online portal closes at midnight on Thursday 4 November.
Funds raised from the event will go toward equipment needed to fit out the proposed pavilion at the Mornington Athletic Track at Civic Reserve.
