Designer farm gates worth $6000 each stolen from Mt Martha and Main Ridge by well organised thieves

They’re worth thousands of dollars, weigh about 80kg and would take some serious muscle and planning to remove, but some unlikely designer pieces have caught the eye of thieves on the Mornington Peninsula — and more than once.

Fancy farm gates worth up to $6000 each are being pinched across the Mornington Peninsula.

The bizarre thefts involved some serious muscle and planning with each of the stolen gates weighing about 80kg and measuring 1.2m.

The first set of gates was nicked sometime between May 22 and 25 from a property on Forest Drive, Mt Martha.

Leading Senior Constable Ashleigh Fletcher of Mornington police said the theft likely took place at night.

“There’s no house on the property, just a garden shed and the section of road it’s on is really quiet,” he said

“It looks like someone has driven past, seen the gates and decided to take them.”

Another entrance gate was stolen from a Main Ridge property on June 13.

Sen-Constable Fletcher said the Main Ridge theft was being investigated by Dromana police.

“It’s a pretty bizarre thing to steal,” Sen-Constable Fletcher said.

“It’s not something you come across very often.”

In both cases the distinctive gates were made to order and installed by Red Hill Country Gates.

Business owner Greg Laing said it would take at least two people to remove the gates and they would need a ute to transport the stolen goods.

Mr Laing, who has been making and installing gates for more than 20 years, said finding a ‘fence’ to shift the stolen property would be challenging.

“Everyone knows our work on the peninsula. It’s very recognisable,” he said.

“The gates are also made to order so designed to fit a specific space. You would imagine whoever took them had a place in mind they wanted them installed.”
