An alcoholic has learned a sobering lesson after he took a stolen taxi for a joy ride through Dandenong.

A drunk who took a stolen taxi for a joy ride in Dandenong has been jailed.

Deng Amol, 29 was sentenced to three months behind bars after pleading guilty in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The court heard Amol and two friends piled into a taxi outside Dandenong railway station after a night on the drink on November 1.

But fed up with the trio’s boozy back seat behaviour, the driver took them to Dandenong police station about 11pm.

After the driver pulled up to the station, got out of the car and started speaking to an officer, Amol’s two friends walked away.

But Amol had other plans, jumping into the driver’s seat while the keys were in the ignition and sped off.

Amol, who has never had a driver’s licence, drove down McCrae and Clow streets before hitting a cyclone fence on Power St.

Chasing officers quickly arrested Amol and took him back to Dandenong police station where he confessed he’d downed a whole bottle of wine before he took the car.

Amol’s lawyer Mahnoor Sikandar said her client knew he’d made a “very stupid decision” and was focused on seeking help for his alcohol addiction.

“(The drive) wasn’t premeditated, it was a reckless, stupid decision and he recognises he could have hurt people at the time,” she told Magistrate Barry Schultz.

Amol pleaded guilty to charges including theft of motor vehicle and drunk in public place.

He was convicted and jailed for three months with 31 days in custody reckoned as time served.

He was also disqualified from obtaining a licence for 16 months and fined $1250.
