DEMOLITION work has started on the controversial former Frankston Ambassador function centre.
Workers have already removed a large part of the roof at the site, which is regarded as Frankston’s worst eyesore.
Council officials confirmed the owners had a permit for demolition.
Developer Harry Matsoukas, who bought the property at a mortgagee auction for $2.24 million last year, declined to comment.
Mr Matsoukas previously told the Leader he wanted to build apartments at the derelict site.
The site is regarded as a magnet for criminal activity and anti-social behaviour.
Frankston councillors have long pushed for action on the centre and in 2014 year unsuccessfully called on the State Government to compulsorily acquire the site and demolish it.
Since closing its doors more than a decade ago, the centre has had different owners, each with plans to create something special at Frankston’s gateway.
The sprawling site has a complex ownership structure.
A chapel adjacent to the function centre has a separate owner while former motel units converted to low-cost apartments at the back of the site have multiple owners.
